Posted by allynkratz on July 10, 2016 in Slideshow, Uncategorized

We had Great Success with our first Willow planting on May 7th and 9th. As part of our ‘Could Fishing be better? Let’s talk.’ effort CMCTU is working with the folks from CPW to improve your fishing in South Park. We need your help. Bring your friends and your family. Kids are absolutely welcome!

Willows planted along the banks of a stream have a very positive affect on that stream. The plants roots stabilize the bank, both keeping the stream narrow and thus the current strong and allowing hiding places under the bank for the large trout that love to reside there. The willow also provides shade to the water and thus keeps the temperature lower. Trout do not do well with warm water. Willows also secrete a sweet liquid upon which ants feed. The result is that many ants fall into the water and the trout love ants.

What: Volunteer days to help harvest and plant willows in the Charlie Meyers SWA (Dream Stream).

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) has been doing a stream habitat improvement project  on the Charlie Meyers SWA for about 2 years. This project is near completion and one of the final steps is to plant willows in strategic areas to stabilize the work and improve the habitat.
You will be able to see first hand the improvements made by the CPW on this project.
At this event you will learn techniques for harvesting/storing and planting willows in a riparian environment. We will discuss the various ways that these willows improve the habitat both in and out of the water.
Lunch will be provided and we will need volunteers to setup a lunch table.
