PPCTU Volunteers will be harvesting Willows on May 4th in preparation for later planting on the Dream Stream. Volunteer to Join Us! The day will include Lunch provided by the Chuck Wagon. The harvest will be taking place on the Middle Fork of the South Platte just north of Hartsel, CO at HEART. HEART is a handicap accessible fishing area maintained by PPCTU. Special Guest Speaker: Miles Groth is a 6th Grade Teacher for the Mountain Academy of Arts & Sciences at Ute Pass Elementary in Chipita Park, Colorado. Miles created the Mountain Academy of Arts & Sciences (MAAS) program ten years ago with the goal of providing a unique approach to public education that focuses on experiential learning, integrated lessons, and environmental stewardship. Miles led an effort in 2022 through which the MAAS became the only school-based program to earn Leave No Trace Youth Program Accreditation (now LNT Gold Standard Youth Program). Miles is a 2024 Colorado Teacher of the Year Finalist and a Colorado Certified Environmental Educator. For 8 years, the MAAS has partnered with Trout Unlimited to run Trout in the Classroom (we have over 150 trout currently in our classrooms!), teaching students fly tying and fly fishing, ice fishing, and monitoring the health of nearby Fountain Creek. The presentation will cover the evolution in our understanding of the Greenback and other Colorado cutthroat trout across the state's river basins, with a focus on the use of genetic analysis to reveal the true origins of each cutthroat population. The Application for the Asphalt plant has been withdrawn due to the overwhelming evidence against such a plant and it's location. Michele White and Don Logelin are representing PPCTU before the Park County Planning Commission during their hearing on the application for a Conditional Use Permit to build an Asphalt plant on the Middle Fork of the South Platte River
